WHO WE ARE
PGT: a group of scientists committed to the investigation of psychiatric genetics
We are one of the most productive psychiatric genetics research groups in the country. Committed to the understanding of the influence of genetics in the development and in the response to the treatment of psychiatric diseases, seeking to contribute to the development of national science and to increase the quality of life of psychiatric patients.
WHERE ARE WE
Interdisciplinarity generating knowledge
The PGT is an elo research group, linking two different departments. We are an integral part of Linc (Integrative Neuroscience Laboratory), which is linked to the Discipline of Psychiatry and to the Genetics Laboratory, belonging to the Department of Morphology and Genetics.
Linc, whose mission is to integrate different investigative modalities for a better understanding of mental illness and is certainly one of the most productive groups in the country, with approximately 300 publications in the last 5 years, national and international funding for projects and several nationally awarded students and internationally.
RESEARCH LINE
Genetics of Psychiatric Diseases
This line of research is the result of a collaboration between the Department of Morphology and Genetics and the Department of Psychiatry at UNIFESP and is coordinated by Dr. Sintia Iole Belangero, Professor at the Department of Morphology and Genetics, Coordinator from the Laboratory of Integrative Neurosciences (LINC) and Coordinator of the Genetics and Biorepository Area of the INPD ( Instituto of Developmental Psychiatry).
We have focused on understanding the genetic and epigenetic bases of mental disorders such as schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, among others. Understanding the genetic basis can contribute to advances in early detection, prognosis and therapy.
Convinced of the imprecision and subjectivity in the clinical evaluation of psychiatric diseases, we have dedicated our research to finding genetic variants, understanding genetic risk and finding transcriptional and epigenetic profiles related to mental disorders.
We have international collaboration with several institutions such as King's College of London (England), Children's Hospital of Philadelphia/ University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, Columbia University and UCLA (USA).
The image below illustrates the cohorts we studied and the available data. For more information, see our cohort pages : High Risk Cohort, Schizophrenia, First Psychotic Episode, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Maternal Adversity.
